What should be done for chickens in the winter?

The coop should be thoroughly cleaned before winter time. If you live in a climate that has mild winters then you will not need to do much to winterize the chicken coop. When the days get shorter, you may want to have a timed light that will provide 10 hours of light so that egg laying does not fall too low. Chickens have an instinct to stop laying eggs as the days get shorter.

When winters are moderate to severe you will need to provide some heat in the coop. There are a few ways that you can do this. Many people who raise chickens use the deep litter method. The coop should be well-cleaned when the days start getting cool. Then 4 inches of litter like hay should be spread in the places where the chickens sleep. Litter will be added to keep it clean and dry. By the time the real winter sets in you will have 8 to 10 inches of litter. The material at the bottom will start decomposing and produce warmth for the chicken. For this method, you will need good ventilation in the coop. You will also find that chickens will huddle together at night and keep themselves warm naturally.
